Now that it is springtime and I've got the itch to get the VW back on the road, I'm looking for an experienced ear to help me evaluate my VR's situation. Before I pull everything apart to find the culprit and potentially rebuild (although that does sound like a good way to improve the engine), I'd rather be driving the car. If it comes to rebuilding, I am also not sure I have the time or know-how at this point.
Issue - Will crank but sounds awful, will actually idle sometimes until I hit gas.
Incident - While driving about 80kms and 3500 rpms I had total engine failure, felt like she seized. At the side of the road I started with no crank at all the first few tries but slowly built up enough power on its own to turn over and get me driving (weakly) around the corner and another 300m. Since then I haven't put it in gear and just started it to let people hear it trying to run.
Thoughts - I am familiar with timing chain noise and this isn't it. It isn't quite a knock, nor a deep sound but seems to be coming from the bottom of the engine. Sounds and feels like something is pulling engine back to stall while it is trying to run.
- 95 OBD1 VR6 Coilpack swapped in 2012 into my Cabby - I did the swap. Direct drop-in aside from doing the clutch (which also grinds into 2nd)
I'd appreciate your thoughts and ideas if you've got them, thanks!

I say just find another low km vr6 and put it in, unless you are gonna build the motor for boost pointless and the cost of rebuilding can get silly and the time...

I suppose doing a second swap might go faster than the first Anyone have a solid OBD1 nearby?

I'm on kijiji all the time I'll keep an eye out, but VRs are a little rare in the south. Toronto on the other hand..
